FOODAMN PHILIPPINES : WHO WE ARE

World's Rarest & Best Tasting Coffee: Coffee Alamid or Civet Coffee

Coffee Alamid the most expensive coffee in town

Also known as Civet coffee

Have you tried civet's dung? manure? feces? It may sound messy and disgusting, but these are the best things in life esp. for true blue coffeeholics.

Coffee Alamid is Philippine civet coffee that comes from the sweetest coffee cherries of the Philippine forests. From the droppings of a cat-like animal refer as palm civet [Paradoxorus Philippinensis], as civets are related to mongoose, locally known as "musang".  Civet coffee is one of the most expensive coffee varieties in  the world.

The palm civets that naturally propagate the sugar palm trees are also the same civets that choose and eat these ripe cherries. The beans are then fermented in the digestive system of the civets, then excreted as whole beans. The coffee farmers pick these civet droppings during coffee season. It is so far the most expensive coffee available in the Philippine market today, the small bottle featured roughly cost PhP800 [$16]. We bought it from a Food Expo here in Manila. In the Philippines, only 500kg are produced a year and the roasted beans sell for more than $115 per kilogram. An international food exhibit I attended recently, the cost of 100grams was PhP2,400 [$48].

Coffee Alamid is a natural blend of the Philippine finest Liberica, Exelsa, Robusta and Arabica beans. The nocturnal civets freely roam the forests in the wild. The beans are all collected in the wild.

Coffee Alamid, when roasted, has a sweet, chocolatey aroma that heightens the senses. It is light and naturally sweet. Its fine and smooth taste is perfect for a good morning start. True coffee drinkers just can't get enough of it! Enjoy it as espresso shot or tall & black (Americano) to savor its true taste and aroma.

Coffee Alamid supports the protection of the civets, the preservation of its habitat in the forest such as the clean streams and arenga pinnata sugar palm trees. Coffee Alamid provides livelihood for the forest dwellers such as the coffee farmers and the revival of the Philippine coffee industry. Coffee Alamid is for nation building.

As foretold, the province of South Cotabato is one of the major sources of coffee alamid in the Philippines, also in Malarayat mountain range. Civet coffee was one of the Philippine's best kept secrets.
