What to eat at Kiampong Foodhaus in Sta. Cruz, Manila
This is not a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.
January 2025. Sta. Cruz, Manila. An overdue post from our last year’s Manila Chinatown Culinary and Heritage Tourhosted by Rence of Walk with Chan.
The group meets at at 9 AM along Sta. Cruz Plaza and took off on our breakfast stop at Kiampong Foodhaus, followed by a walk going to Ambos Mundos. By lunchtime, we spent it at Delicious Restaurant. We then proceed to the Divisoria area for a visit at the temple, and a refreshment stop at Ant Ice. Followed by another walk to Monte Land, then proceed to our final stop at Salazar Bakery in Ongpin.
What to try at Kiampong Foodhaus
Kiampong Foodhaus is not your ordinary carinderia, they started since 1954 with Chinese heritage. Located in Soler St. Known for kiampong rice and staples - kikiam (Php 100 each), lechon paksiw, lechon kawali, bola-bola soup, and makli gawgaw. The area is now developed with tall buildings. The restaurant is located in a low-lying area that is vulnerable to flooding as a result of the main street's elevation during a road rehabilitation. Whilst the heightening of this road, the establishments looks to be in the basement already, as you can see in the image below.
Filipino-Chinese food is the main specialty of Kiampong Foodhaus, which is housed in the Republic Supermarket Building on Soler St. in Binondo, Manila. Popular dishes include a variety of viands to go with their famous Kiampong Rice.
Atchara Tokwa - Tofu with a sweet and sour sauce.
Lechon Paksiw - A sweet and savory pork dish utilizing leftover lechon.
Kiampong Rice - A subtly flavored sticky rice that serves as a staple, best paired with their rich viands.
Kikiam - Homemade Chinese-style sausage, available in regular or a frozen "sulit pack"
Here’s the Chinatown crawlers, all first time to try this underrated ‘kainan’ but amazingly good recipes.
